Steps to Data Visualization

Although it may seem easy to represent data in a quick graph or chart, sometimes it needs more than that to actually be useful. These are 5 steps to make the process of choosing how to represent the data in the best way possible.

  1. Determine what the purpose of collecting the data is. If you are a store trying to make the most profit, the data you collect could be the sales of each item in your store. The purpose of collecting this data is to find ways to make more money.

  2. Understand what type of data you have collected. If it is quantitative data (numbers), you might want to use a graph. If it is qualitative data (descriptions), you might want to use a model. Think about how the visual will help the reader.

  3. Graphs: If you decide to display your data with a graph, the next step is to decide what type of graph best visualizes the data. For example, if you are tracking sales over time, you might want to use a line graph. If you are tracking what percentage of sales each item makes up, you might want to use a pie chart. Some important things to think about when making this decision are the variables, the size, color, and trends over time or correlation between variables.

  4. Ensure your graph, chart, or model is effective, and gets the point across. The data points should be easy to read or point out, and the reader should not get confused. Some ways to make the visual more clear is by adding color or changing the sizes.
