Steps to Data Collection

Data collection can be a long and difficult process, but these are 4 steps to follow.

  1. Determine what information needs to be collected. There is so much data on our Earth today, from what color shirt people like best to stock trend lines. This step is important because it narrows down what kind of data you need. For example, say you wanted to find what color shirt people like best. You don’t need details like which jean brand they like. All you need to ask is what color shirt. You also need to choose what type of data you want, whether it be first party data, second party data, third party data, quantitative, qualitative, etc. (more detail in previous post) There can be a mix of these types of data as well, but you have to choose what best fits with your purpose.

  2. Establish a time frame. As people change, so do likes and dislikes. To keep all data relevant, you have to collect data at a certain time. Even if you were collecting data over time, other factors such as time of day, location, and environment have to stay constant. Say you wanted to find out what the most popular item on your website was during April 2020. The time frame to collect data would be all throughout April 2020.

  3. Determine the method of data collection. In this step you need to figure out how you will collect your data, and this depends on its purpose, its audience, the timeframe, etc. This can be done through surveys, online tracking (search history), and marketing analytics. For example, if you were using the data to see what the most popular item on your site was, you could use the search history of your consumers to see what they search.

  4. Actually collect the data, and move on to next step, which is data wrangling.
